This house bill aims to establish a College of Medicine within the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTSP) – Cagayan de Oro City Campus. This new institution, to be known as the "University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines-College of Medicine," will primarily offer a Doctor of Medicine Program, including an Integrated Liberal Arts and Medicine (INTARMED) Program. Its core objective is to develop a robust workforce of professional physicians, thereby strengthening the country's healthcare system and addressing the human resource development needs of the Province of Misamis Oriental and Region X.
The establishment of this College of Medicine holds significant impact and importance for the people of the Southern Philippines. It will provide increased access to quality medical education, particularly for students in Misamis Oriental and Region X, potentially reducing the need for aspiring medical professionals to travel to distant cities. Furthermore, the bill emphasizes scholarship programs and affirmative action for deserving but poor students, promoting inclusivity and ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder promising individuals from pursuing a medical career. By increasing the number of locally trained physicians, the bill is expected to improve the availability and quality of healthcare services in the region, ultimately contributing to better health outcomes for the community.
