The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), through its National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP), is undertaking a groundbreaking research project called "Musika Pilipinas." This project aims to map the entire Philippine music industry to support its growth and development.
The Filipino music scene is rich and diverse, but it faces challenges in reaching its full potential. Musika Pilipinas will provide valuable data and insights to help policymakers, artists, and industry professionals understand the current state of the music industry and identify opportunities for growth.
What Musika Pilipinas Will Do:
- Define the Philippine music industry: Clearly outline what constitutes the music industry, including all its different sectors (e.g., recording, live music, publishing).
- Identify key players: Create a database of all the important individuals and organizations involved in the music industry.
- Analyze the value chain: Understand how music is created, produced, distributed, and consumed, and identify strengths and weaknesses in this process.
- Assess the impact of digital platforms: Examine how technology is changing the music industry and identify opportunities and challenges related to digital platforms.
- Recommend strategies for growth: Suggest ways to support the growth of the music industry, both domestically and internationally
This research directly supports the Philippine Creative Industries Act (RA11904), authored by Congressman Christopher "Toff" de Venecia. This legislation aims to promote, protect, and improve the Philippine creative economy, with music being a key sector.
